Barndominium DOOR REFRESH featuring Benjamin Moore

Hi Friends,  Welcome to the first blog post on my new website! I’m excited to be sharing my personal home projects, DIY’s, life updates and more on here.

Today, I am sharing a small but mighty update to our temporary home, the barndominium. If you don’t know yet, we are currently living in a converted barn, now apartment on my mom’s property until our home is built, which should be completed within the next 6 months (if all goes smoothly).

The barn was originally built in 1905 by my great grandfather on the farm he purchased In 1900. The farm was located on The Queensway South in Keswick which was later sold by my grandfather to developers in the 1980’s. Just before the property was sold, this barn was torn down and rebuilt on my parents new farm in 1996 located in Sutton West. My parents used this barn as a garage and later converted it into an apartment above and workshop below.

Over the years my mom has made some improvements to the barn like updating the windows, adding stamped concrete to the patio, replacing the roof but overall she wanted to keep the weathered barn aesthetic.

With that said, over time the front door has taking quite the beating and should really be replaced. For the meantime, I wanted a quick solution to updating the door without replacing it. For this job, I wanted to use a good quality paint that could hold up to the amount of use this door gets… which lead me to Benjamin Moore.

For the door colour, I wanted something bright and that would flow nicely within each season. I also chose this colour as it’s the same colour as our new home’s front door. The colour I chose is called Porcelain Blue 1641 by Benjamin Moore.

To transform this front door, I did the following:

Step 1: With soap and water wipe down the door with a cloth.

Step 2: Remove the door knob and deadbolt.

Step 3: Using Benjamin Moore Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer, I did 2 coats of primer. I used a small roller and paintbrush.

Step 4: Once the primer had dried, I did 3 coats of Benjamin Moore Aura Grand Entrance Interior/Exterior Door and Trim Enamel in the Satin Finish, in the colour Porcelain Blue 1641 by Benjamin Moore.

Step 5: Once the paint had dried, I styled the door and front patio.

I love the colour of the door and how it hides majority of the doors’ blemishes! Our pool is located just south of the barn allowing for the pool colour to make the blue door really pop.

To style the new front door, I added a small black and white metal “welcome sign” and two hanging flower baskets to either side of the door. To complete the barn’s front facade, we swapped out the sensor light above the door to a black gooseneck, added our white Muskoka chairs and filled our vintage plant stand.

This quick door colour refersh gave the barndominium a new look and would work on any house with a light exterior. We’ve enjoyed the colour through the spring and summer months and now we’re excited to enjoy it in the fall!

Thank you Benjamin Moore for working with us on this project.
